History

In the early-to-mid' 16th century, Matsudaira Toshinaga, the fifth son of Matsudaira Nagachika of the Anshō-Matsudaira Clan, built Fujiijō, establishing the Fujii-Matsudaira Clan. Fujiijō worked to check the expansion of the Kira Clan to the south. Toshinaga successfully defended Anshōjō against an attack by Oda Nobuhide in 1540. When Lord Toshinaga was killed during an attack on Marunejō in 1560, part of the Okehazama campaign, his son, Nobukazu, took over Fujiijō, and ruled until 1590 when the castle was abandoned due to the forced relocation of the Matsudaira to eastern Japan by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
