History

Morijō was constructed by Satake Masayoshi in 1460; it was used as a residence. It seems the Satake Clan had relocated from Hitachi Province alongside the Isshiki Clan and may have been their vassals or allies. As an exiled clan, the Satake may not have lasted long with the onset of the Sengoku period, as little trace of their lineage in Mikawa remains.

Field Notes

Morijō is a yakata (fortified manor hall) ruin in the rural Mori neighbourhood of Toyokawa Municipality. The site is now that of a shrine and ruins of fortifications remain on the northern side. There is a dorui (earthen rampart) segment, and the remains of a karabori (dry moat) beyond that. The inside of the ramparts have been stone-lined, but this is the result of the shrine's construction. Because only a segment of the ramparts remains, it's difficult to gauge the scale of the fort originally.

Note: This is Morijō in historical Hoi County (Toyokawa Municipality), not to be confused with Morijō in historical Kamo County (Toyota Municipality); both sites are in historical Mikawa Province.
