History

The history of this castle, especially with its proximity to Shiogai Castle on the same ridge, is a little murky. The castle is typically attributed to the Uno Clan who were also vassals of the Hatano. The older theory based on local history chronicles from the late Edo Period (丹波志), which are often not very reliable sources, seems to imply that these two castles were separate and built by different local landholders who were equally allied with the Hatano and worked together in the battle against Akechi Mitsuhide. It is also called the tsume-no-shiro for the nearby Noge Yakata which is actually across the valley and partly up the mountainside.

A more recent theory (2020) says that it is more likely that this was an expansive fortified residence/castle and Shiogai Castle was a satellite fortification to provide better views of the valley that were blocked by that side of the horseshoe shaped mountain range. This latter theory seems more plausible, but also does not account for the Noge Yakata.

Field Notes

The most common approach to this castle seems to be to hike from Shiogai Castle but you could equally start from this side and it might be easier to find the entrance. The last photo below shows it clearly.

The castle has an expansive central bailey and approximately 30 more side baileys including terraced baileys going down the north side. Behind the main bailey is a smaller koguchi entrance type bailey and kirigishi which leads to the trail out to Shiogai Castle.
