History

The Noge Yakata was the fortified residence of the Uno Clan. Across the valley was the tsume-no-shiro or castle of last redoubt. Refer to this castle history for more details. According to local accounts, the descendents of the Uno clan lived on this site through the Meiji Period, so they were not destroyed by the defeat to Akechi Mitsuhide.

Field Notes

I did not expect much before going to this site but was really impressed by two huge horikiri trenches. The trail from the roadside first takes you up to the main trench which separates the residence from the mountain side. The residence side also has a high embankment making the trench seem even taller/deeper. Ringing the main bailey you will find well preserved embankments and the opposite end from the entrance is another huge horikiri trench. Unfortunately this side is not maintained and heavily weeded/wooded over so it took some work to get down inside the trench and back out again. The site was cleaned up, trail created and markers added in 2017. It seems to be somewhat still maintained but is also slowly being reclaimed by nature again.
