History

The earliest record of Tagamiyama Castle is a field fortification by Asakura Yoshikage who stationed forces here in 1573 during the Genki rebellion, but little more is known than that. In the buildup of tensions in early 1583 Hideyoshi fortified Tagamiyama Castle as his main base of operations. The location controls the Eastern end of the Hokkoku Kaido, the critical highway through to the Shibata lands in the Echizen. At the base of the mountain is the Kinomoto Jizoin shrine where the main body of Hideyoshi's forces were encamped. The castle and encampment were manned by Hideyoshi's half brother Hidenaga.

The two central compounds (main mailey and south bailey, #1 and 2 in the map) are likely to be the site of the Asakura fort. Hideyoshi's renovations likely included the embankments surrounding these baileys as well as the extended baileys which show typical 'shokuhoukei' designs like the umadashi styled entrance and L shaped, offset, kuichigai type entrance.

Field Notes

Tagamiyama Fort is well signposted and maintained with an easy to follow trail. It is definitely a must see castle in the area, not just for the connection to the Battle of Shizugatake, but for the design and well preserved ruins.

I estimated 20 min walk to the trailhead but I actually rented a bicycle to visit this one and nearby Tabeyama Fort. You could also easily cycle to Shizugatake Fort and make it a full day out.
