History

Hagijō was built by Okudaira 'Kazumanojō' Sadanobu, the fourth son of Okudaira Sadahisa, in 1442. Hagijō served as a branch castle of Mikawa-Kameyamajō, and was the main castle of the Hagi-Okudaira branch clan. Hagijō is structurally reminiscent of Kawajirijō, the Okudaira's main base built in 1424. Early garrison commanders may have included Kiyohara Umanojō and Naitō Jūrōichi. Later lords included Dengōrō and Katsutsugu of the Hagi-Okudaira. By 1590 the castle was abandoned.

Field Notes

Hagijō is an okajiro (hilltop castle) ruin in Hagi Township, Toyokawa Municipality. Okajiro is a subset of yamajiro (mountaintop castle). Ruins of Hagijō consist of earthworks such as earthen ramparts, trenches and terracing.

The structure of Hagijō is of an oval-shaped single bailey complex with terracing on the north slope of the hill. The rear of the main bailey has a large dorui (earthen embankment) segment banked up above a rear horikiri (trench). The horikiri wraps around the bailey somewhat, becoming a terrace, before continuing as a tatebori (climbing trench) down the hillside.

An interesting feature of Hagijō is that the ôte (main approach) to the castle bailey is somewhat broad and contains terraced pocket baileys alongside. It feels like giant-sized steps leading to the bailey. The koguchi (main gate) area is at an angle, and above is a small mound of earth which is tempting to conclude supported a gatehouse or turret of some sort.
