History

Shironokoshijō was a satellite fortification of Hagijō, and perhaps served as the kyokan (main residence) for the lord of that castle.

Field Notes

Shironokoshijō is a small okajiro (hilltop castle) ruin Hagi Township, Toyokawa Municipality. It is built at the tip of a low-lying ridge. There are two baileys, an upper and lower, with dorui (earthen ramparts) embanked on the western side. The upper bailey has tall dorui mounded to the north, and beneath that a rear horikiri (trench). It seems as though this horikiri was used as a road in later times, and has been deepened, with the excavation being sured up with stonewalls. The trench was probably not as deep, but extended down to where these modern retaining walls were piled. There is a marker for the site at the entrance where a small altar is built into the scarp .

Note: There are at least two sites called 'Shironokoshijō' in historical Mikawa Province (Aichi Prefecture). This one is Shironokoshijō in historical Hoi County (Toyokawa Municipality), sometimes distinguished as Hagi-Shironokoshijō, not to be confused with the Shironokoshijō in historical Kamo County (Toyota Municipality), sometimes distinguished as Obara-Shironokoshijō.
