Takamatsu Castle: Sakuragomon (Takamatsu, Kagawa) 高松城桜御門 [香川県高松市]
I (ART) returned to Takamatsujō to see the then newly reconstructed Sakuragomon, a yaguramon (gatehouse), which was reconstructed in early 2022 using old photographs and maps as references. The Sakuragomon (‘Cherry Blossom Gate’) is a reconstruction of a yaguramon which was originally built in the early Edo period but destroyed during the Pacific War in 1945. Sakuragomon served as the main gate for the sannomaru (third bailey) and Hiunkaku, the castle's palace, and is said to have got its names from the patterned curtains draped from it on festival days.
The second floor of the gatehouse, or the yagura part of the yaguramon, is open to the public (Sat., Sun., and public holidays only; 9:00-16:00), and has some displays inside. When I visited, the fresh wood looked and smelled wonderful.
