History

The Akechi-Tôyama Clan joined the Eastern Army during the Sekiǵahara war and were enfranchised by the new Tokugawa Shogunate as a result; they served as hatamoto (bannermen). Their fief was valued at over 6,500 koku, with about 5,400 koku of that in Ena County, and about 1,100 koku in neighbouring Toki County. In 1615, Akechi-jin'ya was rebuilt to replace the medieval Tôyama Clan stronghold of Akechi Castle. The jin'ya was built at the western foot of the castle-mount. The jin'ya was protected by a moat and berms, and contained buildings such as kitchens, storehouses, offices, a small palatial residence, and several gates. The jin'ya was last surveyed in 1864 but was soon after abandoned.

Akechi Township bills itself as 'Taishō Village' owing to the old townscape. The 'Taishō Rōmankan' is located next-door to the jin'ya site, and there is also a thatched roof cottage from the Edo period (presumably relocated). Just north of the jin'ya is Ryūgoji, a temple containing the mausoleum of Akechi Mitsuhide and the cenotaphs of the Akechi-Tôyama Clan.
