History
Asanojō was the main base of the Owari-Asano Clan (of which the Akō-Asano were a branch clan), and the residence of Asano Nagamasa. It may have been built as early as 1202 by Asano Mitsutoki, but this is not confirmed; it is assumed to have been in place by 1575. In the Sengoku period, castellan Asano Nagakatsu placed his clan under the rule of Oda Nobuhide, Oda Nobunaga's father. The castle was later taken over by Sugiura Gozaemon, a vassal of Oda Nobuo, from 1582. It was abandoned by 1600.
Field Notes
Asanojō is a hirajiro (flatland castle) ruin in Asano Township, Ichinomiya Municipality. Ruins include dorui (earthen ramparts), mizubori (water moats) and baileys. The site is now Asano Park. Although the moat remains largely intact all the way around the site, the area has also been heavily landscaped; in some places the moat is much narrower now than it would have been originally. Earthen mounds have largely been cleared, but some segments remain, particularly to the north of the site where a tall, thick segment of dorui remains.
