History

Asōjō was first built, it is said, by the Asō Clan in the late 14th century (also see Asōkojō). At that time it was located downstream on a hill to the northwest. In 1415, a coalition of local clans called the 'Nakayama Seven' which included the Asō Clan, came under the aegis of Matsudaira Chikauji. In 1429, Asō Kuranosuke became castellan of Asōjō. In the 1440s, Amano Kagetaka took over Asōjō. In 1487, Matsudaira Chikatada defeated Lord Kagetaka and destroyed Asōjō. Chikatada rebuilt Asōjō at this site, upstream and across the river from the old site. Chikatada made his son, Norikiyo, head of the Asō-Matsudaira Clan. Lords Chikamasa, Kiyofusa and Masatada followed as lords of Asōjō. The final lord was Lord Masakatsu, who perished during the Summer Siege of Ôsaka Castle in 1615. Asōjō was then abandoned and a mausoleum for the local Matsudaira clan members built over / near the site.
