History

Chikaokajō is not traditionally part of the 'seven castles of Asuke', but it was nonetheless part of the network of fortifications which protected the town; it is thought to have functioned as a satellite fortification of Narusejō. For more information see Narusejō and Asuke-Iimoriyamajō.

Field Notes

Chikaokajō is a yamajiro (mountaintop castle) ruin on a hill overlooking Chikaoka Township in Toyota Municipality. Ruins primarily include kuruwa (baileys), many of which are terraced along the ridges leading to the hilltop. The main bailey is shaped like an old boat, with embankments to the fore and aft. One castle-blogger said he found a horikiri (trench), but I couldn't find this; I had no map. Small terraces along the ridge which were probably used for agriculture in later times can be found stretching almost to the valley floor. The site is now forested and a mix of bamboo groves and cedar plantations; there are even some cemetery plots. This site is accessed from the necropolis behind Inchōji, a temple with modern but comely stonewalls.
