Wada Castle (Chikuma)

Of Wadajō there's no ruins to see but since the weather was nice I cycled here after work. The site is now fields and rice paddies.

History

One source, where I learned of the site, lists this as a castle site but on the big official map of ruins in Nagano I've also been using to confirm the existence of minor sites it simply says "Wada Ruins". The Wada Clan certainly existed; they used the Tono-yakata (Tono Yakata), also called Wada-yakata, as their main fortified residence. The site is quite far from any useful elevation, but Wadajō is on gently sloping terrain at slightly higher elevation than the yakata. This configuration is not dissimilar to the Furumaya-yakata and Furumayajō twin sites in Aźumi. Wadajō may have been used to protect the settlement of Wada between it and the yakata. Perhaps the settlement itself was partially fortified and this is what is sometimes called Wadajō.
