History
Daikan-yashiki is said to have been the fortified residence of Bandō Sakuwemon, but its construction date is not known. It is thought that Kai-Takeda forces captured and destroyed the fort in 1574. The yashiki functioned as the kyokan (residential area) of Daikan'yashikijō on the mountain above; or, rather, daikan'yashikijō, named for the yashiki, was the tsumeshiro (fortified redoubt) used by the lord of the manor and the Bandō Clan in times of conflict.
My assumption is that the name 'Daikan-yashiki' is apocryphal, perhaps originating with peasants during the Edo period. The site is also called, perhaps more properly, the Bandō-Sakuwemon-yashiki in reference to its attested lord, but even this nomenclature is not certain. If the Bandō Clan acted on behalf of another lord, as per the name 'Daikan', then it is not at all clear whom; the term 'daikan' was more often used in relation to fortified administrative sites during the Edo period ('daikansho', a type of jin'ya; daikan-yashiki), by which time Daikan-yashiki was already ruins.
Field Notes
Daikan-yashiki is a hilltop fortified residence ruin in Ônuma Township, Toyota Municipality. Ruins consist of earthworks. There is a central bailey ringed by an obikuruwa (belt or ring bailey) below. In the east, the obikuruwa has multi-tiered terraces. There is a row of tall terraces in the southeast. The main bailey has some dorui (earthen rampart) remains in the north, and the obikuruwa has a prominent corner of segment of dorui remaining in the southwest. The earthen embankment of the main bailey, created from carving up the hillside, as viewed from the obikuruwa, is quite impressive. There appears to be the remains of a trench to the north (rear) of the site, though it does not go all the way across and so may just be a sunken path for climbing onto the hill. Climbing the mountainside above here leads to the ruins of Daikan'yashikijō.
