Description A moat with this type of ridges forming squares is called a shoji-bori because it looks like a Japanese window or paper screen called a shoji. The ridges make it more difficult to cross the moat and makes any attacker on top of the ridge an easy target. It looks simple to climb in the photo above but originally there would have been no grass just slippery clay. If any attacker tried to cross the moat along the ridges they would be easy targets.
