History
Fujimaru-yakata was a fortified manor hall once belonging to the Yokochi Clan or some off-shoot of it, built sometime in the Muromachi period, possibly the late 15th century; the yakata is named for Fujimaru, the orphaned son of Yokochi Hidekuni who was killed when Imagawa Yoshitada invaded his territory in 1476. Since Yoshitada was also killed shortly after destroying Yokochi Castle, only the orphaned infant sons of the feuding lords survived, promising the conflict would be re-ignited in the future. According to folklore, Yokochi Fujimaru built a residence here in the hopes of reviving the Yokochi Clan, which, if true, would place the yakata's construction in the late 15th century, but it is unknown if there was not some earlier facility on the site connected to Yokochijō. Further, the yakata's destruction likely came in the early 16th century when Imagawa Ujichika restored Imagawa authority in the Tôtōmi Province.
Field Notes
Fujimaru-yakata was a medieval fortified residence site; it is now tea fields, located in Higashi-Yokoji township, Kakegawa Municipality. There is a signboard with an explanation about the site nearly buried in a bush in front of the tea field. At the edge of the field, by the road in the east, is a sign which says 'hidden well'. The well, used at the yakata, was crescent-shaped. I had a look in the brush but couldn't see anything that was supposed to be the well trace. To the west as the road climbs toward the yakata site, one can find some cenotaphs dedicated to the Yokochi Clan.
