History

Fukurōǵajō is reputed to have acquired the name of 'Owl Castle' after the hooting of the nocturnal birds alerted the fort's defenders to a night attack, allowing them to repulse the invaders. The castle is thought to have been one of several Matsudaira clan forts in the area.
