History

The castle dates to a fortified home built by Toshima Chikayoshi in the Heian Period (794-1185). Hiratsuka Castle was the main fortification of the Toshima clan for many generations until they built Shakujii Castle in 1477 during conflicts with Ota Dokan. The castle was captured by Ota Dokan in 1478. Historical excavations have uncovered many artifacts supporting this long history. The only remnant today is the Hiratsuka Shrine.
