History

In the 7th century, Korea was divided into 3 kingdoms, namely Goguryeo, Silla and Paekche. During the Paekche restoration, Yamato court supported that kingdom. Their foes, the Silla Kingdom with its ally Tang China, won a decisive battle at Baekgang in 663. The Yamato court decided after this failure to built several forts in the West of Japan, in prepartion of a possible invasion. Kaneda castle was buit in 667 on Mount Joyama. The outer wall of the castle has a length of 4.8km and goes up to the top of the hill at 276m from the sea level. Several gates, named Ichikido (first gate), Ninokido (second gate), Sannokido (third gate) and Minamimon (south gate) were built along the coast of Aso Bay. After the fear of an invasion the castle was abandoned (year unknown). In 1900 the military built a road and battery on top of the mountain, to counter Russia's southward pushing strategy. After the Russo-Japanese War, the battery lost its utility.

Field Notes

I took a plane to Tsushima island, and from the airport a taxi to my hotel, in Izuhara ward. I looked for several options to get to this site. First option, public transportation: There is a very infrequent bus, and the nearest stop is still at about 3km from the trailhead to the castle. This last one is still 800m from the site itself. Second option, taxi: but I don't know where the taxi will drop you. At the trailhead or on the road 24, at the intersection with the road leading to the trailhead, which is still 2km. I don't know if it's easy to call a taxi from the site after the visit. I opted for option 3. I rented a car. The site is very vast. I've put 3 hours for the required time to visit it, but actually I spent 5 hours on the site. The trails from the Sannokido to the Ichinokido are sometimes in a sorry state. The trail from the Ichikido to the top of the mount is very steep and difficult to use. From the South gate ruins to the batteries the army has built a road for their mortars. This road is more manageable, if you intend to reach the top of the mountain.

In the Fureai Dokoro Tsushima, in the center of Izuhara ward, at the foot of Kaneishi castle and the Tsushima museum, there is a room explaining the history of the island. There is also a model of Kaneda castle. The tourist information center occupies another room, and there you can obtain the 'Next 100 meijô' stamp for Kaneda castle.
