History
Kawanarishima-jin'ya was established in 1857 by Hongō Yasutaka, a wakadoshiyori (junior councillor) in the Edo Shogunate. Kawanarishima Domain was a small domain, but met the 10,000 koku threshold for ranking Hongō, following his promotion to the Council of Elders, as a daimyō.
Hongō Yasutaka was part of the Hitotsubashi faction which supported Tokugawa Yoshinobu (15th shōgun) in successorship to Tokugawa Iesada (13th shōgun). They were rivalled by the Nanki faction under Ii Naosuke who supported Tokugawa Iemochi. In 1858, Ii Naosuke succeeded: Tokugawa Iemochi became the 14th shōgun of the Edo-bakufu. The next year, Hongō was stripped of his rank and deprived of half of his holdings; the Hongō Clan became hatamoto (bannermen) again thereafter.
Ii Naosuke was assassinated in 1860, and Tokugawa Iemochi died aged 20 in 1866 of beriberi, making way for Tokugawa Yoshinobu to become shōgun. Yoshinobu was progressive and reformist, but by then it was too late to save the embattled shogunate, and imperial rule was restored in 1868. Kawanarishima-jin'ya was likely decommissioned in 1871 with the abolition of feudalism. The compound's main gate was preserved and is still extant.
Field Notes
Kawanarishima-jin'ya is a jin'ya site in Fuji Municipality. The site of the jin'ya is directly south of Shin-Fuji Station, but little remains. Some castle-bloggers report the remnants of moats and foundation masonry, but the area has been redeveloped in recent years and I could find nothing definitive there.
However, the compound's main gate, a nagayamon (row-gatehouse), is preserved and has been relocated to downtown Fujinomiya Municipality. It is maintained by a sweetshop and café. One passes through the nagayamon and a pocket garden to the modern but classy café.
