Kawanoe Castle

Kawanoe Castle is a modest site with "restored" ishigaki (stone walls) and reconstructed structures: tenshu (donjon), yaguramon (gatehouse turret) and yagura (turrets). History

The castle was originally built as a fort for the Kohno clan by Dobi Yoshimasa in 1337. In 1342, the castle was attacked and taken over by Hosokawa Yoriharu. The castle was ruled by the Hosokawa until it fell to Chosakabe Motochika in 1582. After Hideyoshi subjugated Shikoku the lord of Kawanoe Castle changed frequently until it was abandoned by Kato Yoshiaki in 1611.

Field Notes

Kawanoe Castle is a modest site with "restored" ishigaki (stone walls) and reconstructed structures: tenshu (donjon), yaguramon (gatehouse turret) and yagura (turrets). The buildings are all a stone’s throw from each other at the top of the hill so it’s quite a snug castle complex. In 1984 turrets, a gate, the main keep and some walls were "reconstructed" to commemorate the 20th anniversery of the founding of Kawanoe Municipality (since merged into Shikokuchūō Municipality), but their appearance is highly speculative, to put it gently. The tenshu is based off of that of Inuyamajō.

This castle site apparently does have some ruins of the original castle to see, such as extant ishigaki and trenches, but the small gallery here presents the site as most people see it: dominated by faux reconstructions. Notes by ART (2024; visited 2016). Photos donated by Frank T.
