History
Kesadairajō was the residence of the Harada Clan, a minor local clan. The castellan is listed as Harada Gonzaemon, though its construction date is unknown. 'Kesadaira' gets its name from the legend that Prince Gyōra, the son of Emperor Go-Daigo, hung his priestly robes ("kesa") on a boulder here. This would've been in the 14th century. The kanji used for 'kesa', however, is different today; 今朝, meaning 'this morning', instead of 袈裟 for the clothing.
Field Notes
A series of terraces carved into the hillside at the foot of Mount Mayumi mark the remains of Kesadairajō, a feudal residence and hillside fortification site in the Asuke Township of Toyota Municipality. The lowermost terrace is now the site of a shrine to Hachiman. The upper terraces were probably formerly cultivated, but now the site is largely overgrown. There is some earth banked up at the top of the site, which I took for a sort of weir. A stream flowed through between the small embankment , flooding the terrace below before running off down the hillside.
