History

Kosugeyama-yakata was the fortified manor hall of the Kosuge Clan. The Kosuge Clan were vassals of the Nishina Clan. It was their duty to protect the easterly mountainous hinterlands of Nishina territory. Raidenjō atop the mountain to the south may have been used as a fortified redoubt during times of conflict, whilst the yakata was used in day-to-day life, meaning the two sites formed a jōkan (castle-hall) complex. Few details are known, however, and this clifftop fort may have also been used as a checkpoint to control the mountain road which ran below.

Field Notes

Kosugeyama-yakata is a clifftop fort site in Yasaka Township, Ômachi Municipality. No clear ruins remain, and the site is now a shrine. Broadly speaking the clifftop is flattened into two spaces, perhaps formerly baileys of the fort, with the shrine hall in the upper enclosure, and a cemetery in the lower part. The shrine's small necropolis contains handsome gorintō (five-tier stone funerary stupas) standing upon mounds.
