History

Kugojō was built by the Miyauchi Clan as their residence at some point between the start of the Kamakura period and the middle Muromachi period, but the details are unknown. Some speculate that the residence was abandoned or destroyed before 1579, because Ichikawa Tadamasa constructed Kumano Shrine at that time, but the shrine wasn’t located at this site until 1707.
