History

A branch family of the Numata Clan from Kozuke (modern day Gunma Prefecture) were assigned to a new position here by the Shogun Ashikaga Takauji in 1351. The Numata established a Sekisho checkpoint and controlled the region watching over this important trade route until nearly the end of the Sengoku Period. Kumagawa Castle was likely built (or renovated) around 1558 amid growing tensions in the region. The Numata clan remained here until they fell to Matsumiya Kiyonaga, a nearby ally of Takeda Shingen, in 1569. The Matsumiya may have used the castle but it was abandoned when Niwa Nagahide took control in 1584.

Field Notes

See also Numatashi Dejiro for a nearby satellite fortification.

Kumagawa Castle has the distinction of being one of the easiest Sengoku Period mountain castles that anyone can easily enjoy without braving disappearing trails, dangerous animals, or needing any equipment like good hiking shoes or trekking poles. It is also well maintained so it can even be visited even in the summer, as I did. It features several tatebori (vertical trenches or dry moats) grouped around two locations at the castle and several terraced baileys going up the hillside.

The Kumagawa district is an amazing little historic site with relics from the early Sengoku Period through to the end of the Edo Period all in one small town that can be visited in a single day. The Jin'ya town also served as a post town and trading outpost during the Edo Period. With many original merchant residences and shops you can enjoy the Edo Period atmosphere and take a break at a cafe in one of the converted shops or warehouses.
