History
Kutsukakemura-toride ('Kutsukake Village Fort') was built - or re-fortified - by Kondō Kageharu, lord of Kutsukake Castle, in 1560, making it a satellite fortification of Kutsukakejō. Kondō Kageharu was an ally of Imagawa Yoshimoto, who was killed later that year in the battle of Okehazama. The victors from that battle - under Oda Nobunaga - then came down and laid waste to Kutsukake, killing Lord Kageharu and destroying Kutsukakemura-toride.
Tea bowls have been unearthed at the site of the fort, and it is thought that Kutsukakemura-toride existed in some form from the early medieval era. Maybe it was initially a fortification to protect a village. It seems that Kutsukakemura-toride fell out of use after 1560 whilst Kutsukakejō continued to be used until the Edo period.
Field Notes
Kutsukakemura-toride is a former fort site in Kutsukake Township, Toyoake Municipality. No ruins remain and the site is now fields. There is a Starbucks surrounded by fields and opposite a large firestation along the Seto-Ôbu East Sea Route (54). Adjacent, in this area where suburban Toyoake gives way to rice paddies, there is a large tree with a small altar beneath dedicated to Jizō. This is the site of Kutsukakemura-toride. It seems this area is earmarked for further expansion of the built area in the future.
