History

Makitajō was built by Makita Munekatsu in 1187. It lasted until the Sengoku period, at which time it was the residence of Kasukabe Ieharu; it was destroyed by Takigawa Kazumasa when Oda forces invaded Ise in 1569.

The site of the castle became a temple, Chōmeiji, in 1652, for which the 4m wide moat was retained. The small stone bridge spanning the moat was constructed in 1808. The temple's belfry was built atop of the yakata's earthen ramparts.

Field Notes

Looking at old pictures, it seems that a pleasant stone-piled wall once also surrounded the temple, but it has unfortunately been modernised, and therefore uglified, in recent years. Those stonewalls probably dated to the Edo period, and so this was another act of twenty-first century vandalism.
