History
Matsumotojō was built in the early 13th century by the Ise-Taira Clan who used it as their base of operations during the Mikka-Heishi Rebellion. They were soon defeated by the Kamakura Shogunate, however.
Field Notes
Matsumotojō is an okajiro (hilltop fort) site in the Matsumoto neighbourhood in urban Yokkaichi. There's actually not much here but my strong attraction to the famous Matsumoto Castle in Nagano made me want to come and check, even though there's no connection between the two sites (I have a side quest of visiting castles with the same name). The top of the hill contains flattened areas which look like they were used as baileys for a simple fort. The hilltop has a long profile and the earth is mounded into dome-like mounds at either end, giving the impression of a ship-shape. Given the castle's early construction date, I doubt keeps were constructed here, but maybe watch towers or archer platforms were. The site is now a shrine and its grounds, called Matsui-jinja.
