History

This fortified residence site is said to have been the residence of Minamoto Noriyori, the brother of Minamoto Yoritomo and Minamoto Yoshitsune, from childhood, which would date it to the late Heian period. Noriyori grew up under the patronage of the Hiki Clan, so perhaps the yakata was a Hiki Clan residence. The Yoshimi Kannon Engi claims that Noriyori studied Buddhism as a child at the nearby Anrakuji temple. Noriyori's son, Tameyori, would take the name Yoshimi, and it is thought this residence may have been his following his father's death, dating it to the early Kamakura period. However, it is unclear whether either man lived at this site. Nonetheless, it was likely a residence of the Yoshimi Clan at some point. The temple Sokushōin was built on the site of the yakata circa 1392. The neighbourhood (koaza) of Gosho, meaning 'Palace', is thought to derive from the yakata or the legends surrounding it.
