History

Miyaishijō was constructed by Matsudaira Noritsugu, third son of Matsudaira Norimoto of the Ôgyū-Matsudaira lineage, and founder of the Miyaishi-Matsudaira Clan. Lord Noritsugu's great grandson, Munetsugu, served under both Matsudaira Hirotada and Tokugawa Ieyasu, but was killed at the Battle of Okehazama in 1560, which gives us some idea of the timeframe of the castle. Matsudaira Yasutsugu was born at Miyaishijō in 1544. He fought at the battles of Takatenjin and Komaki-Nagakute, and would become a tutor for Tokugawa Ieyasu's fifth son, Nobuyoshi. His descendants served as bannermen in the national Tokugawa regime.

Field Notes

Miyaishijō is a hilltop castle (a type of yamajiro (mountaintop castle)) ruin in Miyaishi Township of Okazaki Municipality. The ruins feature terraced bailey spaces, dorui (earthen ramparts), and a well. There are stone monuments erected to mark the castle site and its history. I went to the claustrophobic peak of the hill to make sure not to miss anything.
