History
Mochibukujō was originally built by Mochibuku Sadafuyu, originally of the Asakura Clan, in the early 15th century. In 1560, the Mochibuku clan defeated the Tahara Clan at nearby Hazujō. In 1567, Asakura Mitsutoyo, lord of Mochibukujō, was lured to Nagashimajō, under the pretext of making peace, by Takigawa Kazumasa, a vassal of Oda Nobunaga, and there killed due to his connections to the Rokkaku Clan. Mochibukujō fell soon after, and Takigawa put the Yamaguchi Clan in charge.
In 1977, remains of the castle's outer moat were discovered, indicating that Mochibukujō was a fort of multiple baileys.
