History

Nagijō was one of the forts built by the Ishiyama-Honganji sect during their conflict with Oda Nobunaga between 1570 and 1580. It is mentioned in the Shinchōkōki. The temple on site today, Jōsenji, was founded in 1397, and the fort was likely a temple already before being fortified. The fort was built on the Yodogawa riverside in the village of Nagi, but repeated flooding and subsequent developments have effaced all traces of the castle. It was reported to have typical features such as trenches, berms and baileys.

Field Notes

Nagijō is a former hirajiro (flatland) castle site in the Ikue neighbourhood of Asahi Ward, Ôsaka Municipality. No ruins remain, and the site is now a temple, Jōsenji. I came here because that day I had already visited two other former fortifications sites with temples with drum towers, and so it become a sort of theme for that morning's adventure. The drum tower at Jōsenji is indeed very handsome.
