Ninomiya Castle (Musashi)
Ninomiyajō is now the site of Ninomiya, a shrine which sits on a small hill in Akiruno Municipality of Tōkyō Metropolis, and no fortification ruins remain. The explanatory board at the shrine mentions the castle. There is also a small museum on site but it was closed when I visited.
History
Ninomiyajō was the castle of Ôishi Nobushige who was granted territory in Tama County in 1356 following his service in combatting Nitta Yoshimune in 1351. Ninomiyajō was the main base of the Ôishi Clan for roughly a century between 1356 and 1458 when Ôishi Akishige moved the clan’s headquarters to Takatsukijō.
Although the exact site of Ninomiyajō is disputed, archaeological excavations near Ninomiya Shrine have revealed the remains of a 14th century fortified residence, as well as the site of moats and earthen mounds. Although something was clearly built on the site of the shrine, Hōrinji-yakata to the south has been presented as another possible site of Ninomiyajō.
