History
Nishi-Kuramaejō was the fortified residence of the Honda Clan, vassals of the Matsudaira Clan. Honda Tadakatsu, one of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s most celebrated generals, who between 1560 at the Battle of Okehazama, and 1615 during the Osaka Winter Campaign, fought in 57 battles, was born at Nishi-Kuramaejō in 1548 (this means his first battle was when he was eleven or twelve).

No ruins remain of Nishi-Kuramaejō, likely a fortified residence site, situated on a terrace overlooking a tributary of the Yahagi River. The site itself has defensive value, and there may have been a river-crossing near here. There is a large monument on the site of the castle, largely housing today, proclaiming it as the birthplace of Honda Tadakatsu, a general and daimyō under Tokugawa Ieyasu. The stele and mound is at the end of someone’s driveway.
