History

Nomura-jin'ya was first built in 1600 following the battle of Sekiǵahara, when Oda Nagataka, a nephew of Oda Nobunaga, was granted a small fiefdom of 10,000 koku for his services during said conflict. However, Nagataka's son, Naganori, died heirless in 1631, and was posthumously exiled with the abolition of his domain -- it was illegal for a daimyō to die without an heir.

In 1655, Toda Ujitsune whose brother, Toda Ujinobu, was the lord of Ôgakijō, established the Ôgaki-Shinden Domain, a sub-domain of Ôgaki Domain, worth 4,000 koku. This branch of the Toda Clan continued througout the Edo period from various locations following further enfranchisement. However, it returned to Nomura in 1869 with the creation of Nomura Domain, and the Nomura-jin'ya, also called the Nomura-hantei in its later incarnation, was rebuilt after over two-and-a-half centuries. The domain, a last rasping death rattle of feudalism, was formally abolished two years later.

Field Notes

Nomura-jin'ya, located in Ôno Township, Ibi County (the locale is called No), was a short-lived jin'ya of the early Meiji period (and before that the early Edo period). A gatehouse survives from that time, presumably dating to 1869 when Nomura Domain was established. The nagayamon-style gate served as the jin'ya's main gate, and was relocated at some point after Nomura Domain's abolition in 1871. Now the nagayamon is found about 100m south of a marker and signboard for the jin'ya itself. Of course, I came to see the gate. It serves as the entrance to a private residence now, and has clearly been modified in modern times. Given its relatively recent construction, there may be other surviving structures from the jin'ya remaining.
