History

Odatsuno-yakata was the fortified manor hall of Maruyama Masatomo. The yakata was built with large karabori (dry moats). Making use of natural ravines on the river terrace side, these karabori were extended out around the yakata. However, the remains of this dry moat was filled in in 1947, leaving only the terrace-side segments. The yakata helped to control the Nakakaidō trade route and was likely a branch fortification of Nakanoyamajō on the mountain above to the west. Maruyama Masatomo fought against the armies of Takeda Shingen and was slain at the Battle of Murai by Obata Magojirō.

The karabori segment was very deep and intimidating. The site is now fields. Odatsuno is also the name of the village (how many different readings of 小立野 do you suppose there are?). The site is also called Odatsuno-Nakakaidō-yakata because it was built on the old Nakakaidō trade route. I guess many people encountered this yakata "on the way then" just like me...
