History
Ôhira-Higashiômorijō, also known as Ôhira-Hondajō, was the fortified residence of Honda 'Sakuzaemon' Shigetsugu. Shigetsugu was also known as 'Oni-sakuza', due to his reputation for being a soft-spoken yet ferocious warrior. He served under three lords of the Matsudaira Clan: Matsudaira Kiyoyasu, Matsudaira Hirotada, and Tokugawa Ieyasu (originally known as Matsudaira Motoyasu). He served as one of three magistrates governing Mikawa on behalf of the Matsudaira following the pacification of that province in 1565. Ôhira-Higashiômorijō, which measured about 70m east-west and 90m north-south in rectangular fashion, was part of a cluster of fortifications in Ôhira. The castle was abandoned by 1590 at the latest.
Field Notes
Ôhira-Higashiômorijō is a fortified residence site in the Ôhira neighbourhood of Okazaki City, but no ruins remain. The site is now factories on a slight plateau surrounded by waterways. Stone-piled walls facing the waterways can be found in the area; they look old, but it would be dubious to consider these castle ruins as they were most likely stacked in later times as a way to prevent erosion. Still, with the walls, waterways and embankments, it's easy to envision a medieval residence standing here.
