History

From signboard:

On June 28, 1570, during the Battle of Anegawa, Tokugawa Ieyasu learned of the deployment of the Azai and Asakura forces on the northern bank of the Anegawa River. Advancing from Ryūǵahana-toride, a temporary fort, he established his headquarters here at Okayama. Following the fierce battle, the Oda and Tokugawa coalition emerged victorious. It is said that this victory led to the renaming of the area, previously known as 'Okayama', to 'Katsuyama'.

Field Notes

Okayama-jinsho is an encampment site behind and upon a narrow hill overlooking the Ane River, and the Anegawa battlefield site beyond. Tokugawa Ieyasu encamped here during that battle. The small his is called Katsuyama ('Victory Mount'). I assume Okayama ('Hill Mount') was the original name but the hill got renamed following the battle. There is a signboard about the battle, and an altar. Somebody had left two eggs there as offerings, which is unusual to see. When I noticed the eggs I heard a rooster call.
