Itinerary: These are historically or architecturally important sites. It is worth the effort to go out of your way to visit them.
Audience: Everyone will enjoy a visit here.
Examples: Himeji Castle, Iyo Matsuyama Castle, Kumamoto Castle

Description: Castles tend to have a smaller original main keep with few or no surrounding structures. Some may be reconstructions but have a number of supporting structures or a castle town.
Itinerary: If you are visiting the area you should add this to your schedule.
Audience: Non castle fans will enjoy a trip here too.
Examples: Inuyama Castle, Aizu Wakamatsu Castle, Osaka Castle

3 Stars

Description: Castles are minor reconstructions of main keeps and may be concrete or not be historically accurate. Sites with no main keep should have extensive supporting structures, castle atmosphere/castle town. Castles that are ruins only may also be rated 3 stars if they have well-developed stonework or other features of interest to more than just castle fans.
Itinerary: If you are in the area and have free time it may be worth the trip.
Audience: mainly castle fans and some people who have free time in the area
Examples: Gifu Castle, Kakegawa Castle, Takatori Castle, Takeda Castle, Ota Kanayama Castle

2 Stars

Description: No main keep, some reconstructions of supporting structures or interesting stonework or well developed earthworks. Poor mock reconstructions that are a local historical museum.
Itinerary: probably not worth your time unless you are a big castle fan, have visited other sites in the area or have a specific purpose to go here
Audience: castle fans, people interested in detailed history of the area
Examples: Kiyosu Castle, Oshi Castle, Hachigata Castle, Yamanaka Castle,

Description: All ruins, not oriented towards tourism
Itinerary: Only visit if you've seen all other castles in the area. Castle novices may be disappointed with "nothing to see"
Audience: Serious castle fans
Examples: Minowa Castle, Takatenjin Castle, Shinpu Castle, hundreds more...
