There is a large amount of stonework scattered around the base of the mountain as well as the top so take your time to explore. The site is well maintained to provide good views of the area and to see the remaining stone walls. This looks like an interesting site and not far form Kumamoto so I'd def
History
The wealthy Sashiki Clan built their castle on this site in the Nanboku-cho Period. In 1581, it was taken over by the Shimazu. After it came under the control of Kato Kiyomasa in 1588, he renovated the castle and built up the stone walls you see today. For a relatively small castle, it had well developed stone walls. In 1600, after the Battle of Sekigahara, the Konishi and the Shimazu laid siege to Sashiki Castle for a month until the Shimazu withdrew. The castle was abandoned in 1615 under the One Castle per Country law.
