History

Segijō was built in or before 1493 by Makino Kohaku, as a secondary residence after Makino Castle, and as a base from which to advance territorial control along the river terrace of the Toyokawa. The Makino were vassals of the Isshiki Clan, along with the Hatano Clan. In 1493, Hatano Zenkei overthrew the Isshiki Clan, capturing Isshiki Castle. Not content to let the Hatano take over, however, Makino Kohaku went to war with Hatano Zenkei. A clash at Haiźukano ('Ash Mound Field'; location unknown) saw the Makino victorious. Makino Kohaku then captured and moved into Isshikijō. His first son took over Makinojō, and his second son, Makino Shigekatsu, became lord of Segijō.

Field Notes

Segijō is a hirajiro (flatland castle) ruin in Segi Township, Toyokawa Municipality. The site is now a local shrine, and ruins remain in the form of earthworks, such as dorui (earthen ramparts) and moats. The configuration of the fort was roughly oblong, and the ramparts can still be seen along the western and southern perimeters; dorui can be seen on either side as one enters the shrine's grounds. There is a long moat segment in the west, about 6m wide. It is now mostly dry but was originally a water-filled moat. When built, Segijō had three projecting barbican-like sub-baileys at various points around the main bailey, but these outer ruins have now been developed over with rice paddies and housing.
