History

Shigetsu-Fushimijō is the first iteration of Fushimi Castle built in 1592 on the plain beneath the later mountaintop castle. In 1596 it was levelled in an earthquake and Toyotomi Hideyoshi relocated to highground.

Archaelogical investigations carried out in 2021 showed that the castle's outer limits were more extensive than previously thought, and included a northern bailey, perhaps the site of a residence for Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Research is ongoing.
