History
Shōrakujijō was constructed in 1368 to protect the Kōra Manor which belonged to Kyōgoku Dōyo from the Rokkaku Clan's advances. Takatsuki clansmen made up the garrison. Kyōgoku Dōyo, known as the 'basara daimyō', had a residence just beneath the castle called the Kamiai-yashiki. The residence was built first, in 1340. Shōrakuji, the temple, was founded by Kyōgoku Dōyo in 1341. Lord Dōyo died in 1373.

Shōrakuji is a temple at the foot of the castle-mount, for which the castle and village are named. The temple's sanmon (main gate) is a surviving relic of the castle. This yashikimon (residence gate) was originally built half-way up the mountain at a place referred to as the Kamiai-yashiki, which was used as a residence for Kyōgoku Dōyo. The yashiki was the kyokan (residential annex) of the castle.
