Field Notes
Sugawayama-toride is a yamajiro (mountaintop castle) ruin located on the border between Kashiwabara Township, Maibara Municipality, in Shiga Prefecture, and Imasu Township, Sekiǵahara Municipality, in Fuwa District, Gifu Prefecture. Historically it straddled the border between the provinces of Ōmi and Mino. The castle is sometimes referred to as Noseyamajō when paired with Takekurabejō on the same mountain. Sugawayama-toride was a satellite fortification of Takekurabejō. 'Toride' when used in place of '-jō' often refers to satellite fortifications.
Sugawayama-toride is an earthworks fort site and ruins feature dorui (earthen ramparts), kuruwa (baileys) and trenches. The scale of the fort is of a single bailey complex, but the earthworks along the northern ridge, facing away from Takekurabejō in the east, are very complex, forming a 'コ'-shaped gate complex and triple trench system.
