History
After the Battle of Sekigahara Terazawa Hirotaka was awarded the area of Amakusa for his bravery in the battle. He built Tomioka Castle from 1602 to 1605. In 1637, Tomioka Castle was the site of fierce fighting during the Shimabara Rebellion. The Christian rebels made it to the Ninomaru compound before reinforcements arrived and they were forced to retreat. In 1670, the castle came under direct control of the Tokugawa government and the castle was mostly dismantled. A government office and outpost were built in the Sannomaru where it functioned until the Meiji Restoration.
