Background
The Tsuda-tei, built in the late Edo period, was the primary residence of Tsuda Genba, a high ranking retainer of the Kaga Domain who had a stipend of 10,000 koku, which was the equivalent of some smaller domains. After 1870 the building served initially as a medical academy founded by Tsuda, and then in many medical related capacities, including as part of a hospital. The residence was originally located in the Ohtemachi area, but was moved to its present location in 1923 to serve as the Kenroku Meeting Hall. It is now used as office space for the Kenroku Gardens and is not open to the public. The building’s most notable architectural feature is the large gabled entrance area.
