History

Tsuyajō was the castle of Takagi Masaie in the late 16th century. The castle had three baileys and a moat. The baileys were constructed as terraces lining the hillside. Takagi Masaie backed the losing side during the Sekiǵahara campaign, leading to him being stripped of his fief. The castle's second bailey was then converted into a temple.

Field Notes

Tsuyajō is a hillside castle ruin in Tsuya village of Nannō Township, Kaiźu Municipality. The site today is a temple, Honkeiji, but the temple's main gate was originally built for the castle; the temple was founded in the Edo period and the gatehouse was relocated at that time. The gatehouse is a nagayamon-type building, with wing annexes on either side of the gate itself.

The gatehouse is presumably Sengoku period, though I would be surprised if this had been verified, and no solid date is given. It looks like it could be Edo period... The shape of the castle's baileys have been altered, and the handsome ishigaki (masonry) is probably from the Edo period and erected for the temple, which sits in what was once the castle's second bailey. It is said that the small hill above the temple was also fortified, and that the ruins of earthworks remain up there, but I could see no way up. At any rate, I came chiefly to see the gatehouse.
