Uchi Castle (Chikuma)
The former centre of Uchijō is located adjacent to the Horinōchi-yashiki and is today completely developed over with residential structures and vegetable patches, and so unfortunately no ruins remains of the medieval fort. See: Horinouchi Yashiki.
History
Uchijō was the site of a medieval castle, or, more probably, a yakata (fortified manor house), and then later, in the proto-modern era, it became the Horinōchi-yashiki, the residence of the Nanushi (village magistrate) of Horinōchi-mura. Although no physical ruins remain of the medieval structures, we can surmise from the name of the village that a castle or yakata existed here called Uchijō and that it possessed moats.
