Ueno Castle (Mikawa)

Uenojō, also known as Uenokamimurajō, is a hirajiro (flatland castle) ruin in Kamigō Township, Toyota Municipality. The ruins consist of a corner segment of tall, thick dorui (earthen ramparts). The site is now used as a park, shrine and civic hall.

History

Uenojō was constructed in the mid' 15th century by Toda Munemitsu. In 1480 he built Taharajō, leaving his son, Toda Iemitsu, in charge of Uenojō. By 1493, however, Abe Magojirō was castellan; that year he was defeated by Matsudaira Chikatada, and Matsudaira Nobusada took over Uenojō. Nobusada was succeeded by his son, Kiyosada, who was in turn defeated by Matsudaira Hirotada who installed Sakai Tadanao as castellan of Uenojō in 1545. During the reign of the Sakai Clan, Sakakibara Yasumasa, a renowned general of Tokugawa Ieyasu, was born at the castle in 1548. Sakai Tadanao was deposed during the failed 1563 Mikawa-Ikkō-Ikki uprising against Tokugawa Ieyasu. Uenojō was destroyed in the conflict.
