History

Usuida Shukuuchi Fort was built as a supporting fortification for Usui Castle. It is fairly large for such a fortification with one main bailey, a large secondary bailey and and several smaller koshiguruwa baileys along the sides. Several of the photos are simply labelled "koshiguruwa". They are not the same bailey nor is this a name. It is a term for a bailey set lower on the mountainside along the outside of a main bailey. It increases the flat area of the castle and provides a primary defensive point before retreating back up to the main bailey. This site was also decommissioned with Usui Castle.

Field Notes

I really debated whether to include this in the Usui Castle profile or split it out as a separate one, but most websites give it a separate profile. If it were smaller I would have included it with Usui Castle but it's a full half km away and interesting enough that I think it's worth bringing attention to it. Usui Castle had several other Forts as well but they have all ben developed over by now. I sincerely hope they can preserve at least this one.
